Last Friday I was extremely lucky to get to see the new show in town, 'American Psycho' at the Almeida Theatre. The second batch of tickets sold out in minutes with thanks to the leading actor, Matt Smith as the handsome but insane Patrick Bateman. A friend managed to nab the 3 last tickets for that days performance...on the front row!

It is new musical based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis and the 2002 movie with Christian Bale. set in 80's New York about a young businessman obsessed with horror movies who appears to be loosing his mind. There are raves with meat cleavers, drunk elves, singing, drugs and death by nail guns. Perfection!!!
Never seen anything like it, it felt so new and refreshing. Even though I saw a preview, it was so well put together and slick. Looking forward to reading the review after the opening night on 12th December.

I really hope it transfers to the west end, basically as I NEED to see again the group of suits dancing and singing about business cards. I NEED to see the epic rising of killing madness in the form of 80s nightclub dance routine. The Almeida stage is quite small so the extra space of a larger theatre would give it much more power.
I best say a word on Matt Smith. The first thing we have seen post Doctor Who and clear to say he is definitely shrugged off any mr nice guy persona! Patrick Bateman is a mad man, there's a x-rated scene with a giant cuddly toy, taking cocaine in a toilet cubicle and a few scenes where he is nearly naked. I actually thought he did look a tad out of depth in places, but very early days for this role and sure his swagger and confidence will magnify.
When my friends and I left the show, we were almost speechless on the brilliance and subsequently spent the next two hours going over all the best bits at the pub. This is what I love about theatre, it can bring such passion out of you. I feel lucky to be in London in this 'golden age of theatre' as I've head people say. Better go make some money then to buy more tickets!
